I had my mammogram this morning. I won't lie and say I was looking forward to today. I had apparently forgotten to schedule it for last year, I am ashamed to say. However, I decided it was necessary to suck it up and just get it scheduled...and my oldest son made a point to hold me accountable for getting it scheduled. I decided I would get it scheduled for this week, before my birthday and get it done before the Texas heat really kicks in and it's a problem to go with deodorant. I just wanted it to be over with. To that end, I was rushing around this morning to get lunches prepared and get out of the house to my appointment so I wouldn't be late. I sat down and grabbed a magazine, with the hope that they would call my name quickly. Then quickly decided I should send a text to my coworkers, so I put down the magazine. I know a lot of people read OK and Good Housekeeping and the like, but I'm really not one of those people. When I sat back down, someone else had grabbed the magazine I had so I had to find something else to pretend to read while I was sitting anxiously for them to call my name. I only managed to get through a few pages, while listening to other women talk about how they were using these new products, which was supposed to make their faces look better so they didn't have to wear make-up.
Sidebar for a minute: you have to wear make-up? I guess I don't feel that way since I've never been one that felt like I had to have make-up on to leave the house. I wonder if either of them realized that I wasn't wearing any?
Back to the previous subject: Cindy, my tech, came to the door and called Ms. Walton? I promptly got up and made my way around to find a woman that would change my attitude about getting a mammogram. Cindy asked me various questions, such as do you know where the majority of breast cancer is found? Um, no. So she politely educated me on the answer and how to properly perform a self exam. Seriously, she provided me with a wealth of information that I didn't even realize that I didn't have. She even provided me with a "cheat" sheet so that I would remember how she told me to do the self exam. She explained as well as assisted me in getting in the correct position. Honestly, no previous tech had been that patient or explained why so well. Cindy shared a small portion of her "story" with me as to her "why" and her reasons making the choice to educate her patients. Her daughter, at the age of 15, had a lymph node swell up. She thought it was just normal stuff because she was healthy and their was no cancer in her family history. She took her to the doctor and discovered that her daughter had Hodgkin lymphoma. This has made her very diligent in educating her patients. She quickly made me feel like this was not something I need to just get through...I needed to know what may happen to my body and what preventative steps I could take. When I left, my attitude was completely different than when I first arrived and checked in. Cindy, thank you for taking the time to educate me! If you need to schedule an appointment and would like to see this wonderful tech that I saw, she is at Solis Mammography on 15th Street in Plano and her name is Cindy.
Please take time to make sure that you get the exams you need to in order to take care of yourself. There is someone in your life that will definitely notice you are missing if you don't take that time. I am being reminded repeatedly that my family will not last forever and I need to make time to spend with them. Of late, I can honestly say that I wish I had written the stories that my grandmother, great aunts and uncles and cousins used to tell when I was little. What I wouldn't give to sit down and hear these stories again. But I am trying to take the time to relive and remember what I can with those family members I have left. The Bible makes it clear that we aren't promised tomorrow...until next time!

My doctor has told me twice to schedule a mammogram, and I haven't done it yet. I really don't want to. So your post had pretty good timing! How is Cindy's daughter doing now?
ReplyDeleteYou really do need to schedule it, girlfriend! Honestly, she did not say. We talked about so many things in that brief time together. But her taking the time to educate me and ask me questions really meant a lot to me.
